Business Sense: Scentsy Startup

When I was looking at my letterpressing and the cost for starting up, I realized that it is going to take me much longer to get going than I was anticipating. I contacted a few banks to see how their startup programs work for loans, credit cards, etc. I also contacted the Small Business Administration to get a feel for the grants and the loans that they can work out for me. Either it wasn't enough to startup with ($500) or they need more information from me, such as silly things like projections, supply and inventory costs, etc. It looks like there will be more research and work to do in order to get back to them. One bank even said that they love to help startups, after they can should a year's worth of business. Not my idea of startup assistance...by that time I will have what I need.

So, a friend of mine was looking at a Scentsy catalog and of course I joined in. I love the warmers and the different scents. It's always fun to gather around the little testers laughing, making faces at the bad smells (like leather), and relishing in the ones I love. As we were going through the basket, I thought about how much this product sells itself. It's not crazy expensive, everyone loves a nice smelling home, and it makes great gifts. So I thought to myself - why not sell Scentsy?

It was downhill from there. Kip and I talked about the pros and cons - because you know I have to list them out - and he said the same thing - why not sell Scentsy? So I signed up. I set up my first party, mailed invites, called and emailed invitations, and this weekend had a cheese/wine themed party. I'm not going to say that it was the most successful party, but we had a great time and that's what I was hoping for. Scentsy is about enjoying yourself and having fun with friends and family - just like the first time I sat around the basket of testers.
